About Ted

Ted Greenberg began his museum work experience as a volunteer at the Newark Museum in Newark, New Jersey. He was exposed to the workings of the Registrar’s office and knew that he enjoyed that aspect of the profession.  After two years doing this work, Ted moved to San Francisco in 1976 to begin his studies at Lone Mountain College, in Museum Studies.  The program moved to John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California and Ted received his Master’s degree in Museum Studies in 1980.  While enrolled at school, Ted did an internship at the Judah L. Magnes Museum in Berkeley, California eventually turning into a paid position. He was involved with the expansion and renovation of the museum, helping to design new storage facilities. Ted worked at the Magnes Museum until 1984, applied and was offered the position of Registrar for Permanent Collections at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He worked there moving the collections a number of times, aiding with the deaccession of over 10,000 items and again designing a new storage facility for the Legion of Honor Museum.  In August of 1999, Ted left the Fine Arts Museums to a new adventure to become the head registrar of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art until the end of 2006. He then decided to embark on an independent museum consultant specializing in registration and collection management. He has consulted for museums, galleries and private collections.

Since 1976, Ted has been very active in the professional Registrar committees of the American Association of Museums and Western Museums Association and served on the AAM program committee for its annual meeting in Chicago. He is presently serving his second term on the Western Museum Association Board. Ted has served in the capacity of officer, chair of nominating committees and program committees and has presided or presented many panels at regional, national and international meetings.  These panels range from earthquake safety for collections, valuation of collections, the role of the registrar, long term loans and abandoned property, collection management system upgrades and the ins and outs of being a museum consultant.  For ten years, Ted was also very active teaching Documentation of Collections and mentoring students at John F. Kennedy University.  Many students from his classes have gone on to Registration positions at many museums around the country. He also has done many guest lectures at San Francisco State University, University of California, Berkeley and University of California, San Francisco extension.
